Many of you know I returned to full-time with my business late last fall. I spent most of 2023 as the Economic Development Director for the City of Tioga. I had so much fun in this role and really excelled. I learned so much at the state and local level and realized how many resources are available to small business owners in rural areas! Seriously, reach out to your local economic development department or the Rural USDA if you are looking for any type of funding in rural areas.
While I loved the work and the people I was helping, I was slowly dying inside, punching a time clock and slowly waiting for vacation time to accrue, hoping it would be enough to attend my sister’s wedding. Also, the political things that come with being employed by the local government were taking a toll on my mental health. In September, I transitioned into editor and business development director for a media company, which meant I could work remotely. I also learned a ton there as well. This role didn’t last long as the leadership and lack of focused direction proved to be not my cup of tea.
So, in mid-November, I took that brave step forward into my own business again, and I haven’t looked back. I’ve been recording podcast episodes, coaching women entrepreneurs as they start their photography businesses, planning their cut flower business, rebranding their soap-making Etsy shop, launching their blogs, and redefining their business goals and ideal clients. I’ve continued to book weddings for later this summer and fall, and I’m thriving on the freedom I have with my time and business.
Now it has not been all sunshine and rainbows I have had so much self-doubt as I’ve navigated this entrepreneurial journey as a divorced mom to two. Our day-to-day life has also shifted significantly in the past two months. Joel (my amazing boyfriend) has been working the night shift. He transitions back to days next week (thank you, lord!). My circadian rhythm has no idea what is going on, and do you know how hard it is to be quiet all darn day when your partner is sleeping during the day?
About two weeks ago, we became the temporary home to the department’s narcotics K9 unit, K9-Izzy, after her previous handler left the department for a bigger agency. This sweet 2-year-old black Lab has transitioned so well into our household. She has become best friends with Tripp, our golden doodle puppy. She’s not sure about Waffels the bunny. We keep reminding her bunnies are friends, not food. (cue Finding Nemo shark voice here).
Even though Izzy has transitioned seamlessly, unfortunately, this hasn’t been a smooth transition for the department from a PR standpoint. Her previous hander was pretty upset Izzy was not retired to him and took to social media to share his grievances. Izzy has only been with the department for four months and had no medical reason to retire. Most K9 officers will serve 8-10 years.
Ultimately, the City Commission voted to keep Izzy as a K9 Officer for the City after a lengthy Commission meeting. Izzy’s trainer and a vet agree that it is in her best interest to continue doing the work she loves and was bred and trained for. Izzy has recently returned to patrol with Joel. Her first day back to work after a few weeks off she was so excited I thought she would jump out of her skin as she waited for Joel to get all his gear on. While the Department has not officially announced that Joel will become her next handler, we are fairly confident he will. Tripp is pretty excited his new best friend gets to stay.
The kids are doing great; we are planning Grayson’s birthday party here in a few weeks. Sky has been recording her iPad drawings and sharing her animations on YouTube, and Wyatt will be coming up for spring break before 8th-grade graduation later this spring.
Life is busy, full, beautiful, and we are thriving.
