As a photographer specializing in engagement shoots in North Dakota, I have learned to appreciate the unique beauty of our state’s landscapes and how they complement a couple’s love story. This was particularly evident during my latest session with Karah and Justin against the rustic rural backdrop near the White Earth Dam. Despite the cold temperatures of a late November afternoon, with the mercury hovering just below 30 degrees, the calm winds and golden sunlight provided the perfect setting for capturing their love.
Timing is crucial in North Dakota, particularly when it comes to natural light. In June, the sunset extends well into the evening, but by November, we have to begin our sessions at 3 pm to take advantage of the coveted golden hour glow. Equipped with hand warmers – a small yet essential comfort that quickly becomes necessary – we set out on a late afternoon journey to capture some moments.
Hand warmers are a source of comfort and a practical tool for me. They help prevent everyone’s fingers from turning blue, which saves me hours of editing time. The small things make a big difference, both in terms of comfort and post-production.
Karah and Justin’s story is filled with uncertainty. They met in college after their parents had attended college together years ago. During Karah’s senior year of high school, her mother placed Justin’s graduation announcement on their fridge and suggested that Karah should meet him. Eventually, a friend introduced them at a gathering, blossoming their beautiful relationship. As they say, the rest is history.
Following her heart, Karah moved up to northwest North Dakota. She’s pursuing a nursing degree and shares her passion for volleyball by coaching a local rec team – she even coached my daughter’s team this fall! That’s the beauty of small-town life; the connections are deep, and the community ties are strong.
Karah and Justin will tie the knot next September, and I can already envision the magic that will unfold on Justin’s grandparents’ family farm. It will be a day where their past meets their future, surrounded by loved ones who have known them from the start.
Our session was filled with laughter, shared warmth, and love that speaks softly but resonates deeply. As the sun dipped lower, casting a golden blanket over the valley, we captured a series of shots that screamed ‘Yellowstone’ – right down to the barbed wire fence, Justin’s cowboy hat, and the Cinch vest that mirrored the golden hour light.
As a photographer, there are moments when you feel excited about capturing something extraordinary. During an engagement photoshoot, I found myself in one such moment, snapping away enthusiastically while Karah seemed amused. However, that’s the beauty of engagement photography – it allows you to celebrate the couple’s journey and get caught up in their joyous spirit.
As a North Dakota engagement photographer, I have the opportunity to capture moments in time that signify the beginning of a lifelong journey, just like the beautiful session of Karah and Justin. Their engagement photos are not just images but the start of a story that will be told for generations to come.
As the session came to an end, I felt satisfied. There’s nothing I love more about my job than capturing love stories in the heart of America, under the vast sky of North Dakota, even as the last rays of sunlight fade, and the warmth of the hand warmers dissipate.
Looking forward to their wedding next year, I am grateful to have the opportunity to be a part of their next chapter. I feel honored to help tell their story, one photograph at a time, under the golden hour sun of North Dakota. And for all the couples I photograph, I am privileged to be able to capture their love stories that will last for a lifetime.
