We start the new year full of excitement, resolutions, and big goals. But as the days roll on, the motivation can begin to dwindle. Research even shows that the second Friday in January is considered “Quitter’s Day” — a point where many people abandon their resolutions.
But here’s the thing: You don’t have to quit. You don’t have to give in to that voice that says, “It’s too hard” or “Maybe I wasn’t meant to do this.” You can restart at any moment. You just need to plant the seed of belief in yourself.
Here in North Dakota, January is deep winter, and my garden is a frozen dream. But even now, I’m starting seeds indoors — not for just any plants, but for eucalyptus and lisianthus. These plants have an incredibly long germination period, meaning they take weeks before even the tiniest green sprout appears.
Imagine staring at a pile of dirt for 35 days, waiting for a sign of life. It’s easy to doubt. Did I do something wrong? Did the seeds die? Should I start over? But if I trust the process, I know that beneath the soil, those seeds are doing exactly what they need to do.
Your goals work the same way. Just because you don’t see immediate results doesn’t mean growth isn’t happening.
One of the biggest mindset shifts you need to make when feeling stuck is this: You must believe in the outcome before you see results.
Every successful business, personal transformation, or life change starts with the simple act of faith. You plant a seed, you tend to it, and you trust that growth is happening beneath the surface, even when there is no visible proof.
There are two key points in any big endeavor:
Many people get stuck in the first phase. It feels productive, but without action, it’s just procrastination in disguise. You may think you’re preparing, but in reality, you’re stalling because action feels scary.
If you’re waiting for the perfect moment, the right sign, or more confidence before you start, stop waiting. The only way to build confidence is by doing.
Life isn’t a straight path. It’s a series of seasons. Just like my garden goes through a cycle of growth, rest, and rebirth, so do we. Maybe you’ve had a season of setbacks, a season of waiting, or a season of learning. Now, it’s time to plant again.
When I left my stable government job in economic development, I knew it wasn’t a failure. It was a stepping stone. I took everything I learned and carried it forward. That’s the beauty of movement: As long as you keep learning and growing, you can never truly fail.
Nike had it right: Just do it.
Waiting for the perfect conditions is a recipe for staying stuck. Instead of overthinking, take action today. What’s one small thing you can do to move forward?
Small steps compound into big results. You don’t have to do everything at once; you just have to start.
Forward motion creates energy. The more you do, the more confident you become. And here’s the best part: You can’t fail if you keep going.
Every experience — even the ones that don’t work out — teaches you something valuable. You take what serves you and leave the rest behind. That’s how you grow.
I believe this year is going to be a turning point for so many women. It’s time to break the cycle of self-doubt and start betting on yourself. If you needed a sign, this is it.
Take the next brave step. You’ve got this, and I am cheering you on every step of the way.
1. Why do I feel stuck even though I have big goals?
Feeling stuck often comes from fear of failure, overwhelm, or a lack of immediate results. The key is to shift your mindset and take small actions daily.
2. How do I stay motivated when progress is slow?
Focus on the process, not just the results. Track small wins, celebrate growth, and remind yourself that consistency compounds over time.
3. What should I do if I keep planning but never take action?
Set a deadline to take action. Break tasks into tiny, manageable steps and commit to one daily. Accountability partners or coaches can also help.
4. How do I know if I’m on the right path?
If you feel excitement, curiosity, and some fear, you’re likely on the right path. Trust your instincts and adjust as you go.
5. What’s the best first step when feeling overwhelmed?
Choose one small action and do it today. Momentum builds when you move, even if it’s a tiny step forward.
